Remove any word from a PDF or EPUB.

Type what to take out — a name, a phrase, a whole paragraph of it. Redactly finds every instance and hands back a clean file, without ever leaving your browser.

Zero uploads.

Every page, every chapter, every match and rewrite happens on your device, in your browser tab. Your file is never sent anywhere — not to a server, not to us.

Two formats, two ways of removing text

A PDF and an EPUB aren't built the same way, so Redactly treats them differently — and tells you exactly what happened to your file.

PDF

Covers it, precisely

Redactly reads the page's text layer to find the exact coordinates of every match, then draws a solid block over each one — white to blend in, or a black bar for a classic redaction look. Gone from view and from copy-paste, though the original bytes remain underneath — great for tidying up what a reader sees, not a substitute for legal redaction.

EPUB

Deletes it, completely

An EPUB is a zip archive of real HTML chapter files. Redactly opens each one, walks the actual text nodes, and cuts your matches out at the source before repacking the book — so the words are genuinely gone from the file, not just hidden from view.

PDF style
How this differs by format — in an EPUB, matched text is deleted from the file's content, so it's genuinely gone. In a PDF, matched text is covered with a solid block at the same spot — visible and copy-proof, but the original text technically still sits underneath. Not a substitute for a real redaction tool if the words are sensitive.
Add at least one word or phrase to remove.

Questions people actually ask

Does Redactly upload my PDF or EPUB anywhere?
No. The file is read, edited, and rebuilt using JavaScript running in your own browser tab. It never touches a server — Redactly's or anyone else's.
Will this actually delete the words, or just hide them?
Depends on the format. In an EPUB, the matched text is cut out of the underlying HTML — it's genuinely gone. In a PDF, matches are covered with a solid block at the same position; that's reliable for cleaning up what a reader sees, but the original text can still technically be recovered from the file's raw data, so don't use it for legally sensitive redaction.
Can I remove a name from an EPUB novel or a report?
Yes — list the name (or any phrase) in the box, and Redactly will remove every instance from the book's chapter files while leaving the rest of the formatting intact.
Does it work on scanned PDFs or photos of documents?
Only if the PDF has real, selectable text. Redactly finds matches using the page's text layer, so a scanned image with no text layer underneath won't have anything to search.
Is there a cost, an account, or a file size limit?
It's free, with no account. Because everything runs in your browser, the practical limit is your device's memory rather than any cap Redactly imposes — very large files may run slowly.
